What Does it Take to Become a Successful Mentor or Volunteer?
There’s no one right way to be a good mentor to the youths in the community. Everyone has their own style when communicating with and leading children.
However, some of the best mentors possess the following qualities:
Each year more than 11,000 kids are served through the foster care system in Maryland alone. Many of these kids are taken to a foster home with no belongings or a few items thrown into a trash bag. The Feel Comfortable Bag provides placement bags to be given to kids at time of a placement. It’s important to give them a good quality bag to reassure them that they or their belongings are NOT disposable.
Part of the role of the Shanell Nicole Foundation is to help provide youths in the community with what they need to be better prepared for their school day. The goal is to see students thrive, while building strong peer relationships, and having an overall positive school experience. For many students, this is not possible because they cannot afford the items necessary to take care of their physical hygiene needs.
Why backpacks matter
Each August, we provide brand new, name brand tennis shoes, sweatshirts, school supplies & backpacks to more than 200 kids who are impacted by foster care or adoption.
